Who is conducting this study?

This study is led by Dr. Leila Strickland, PhD, BIOMILQ's Chief Scientific Officer and Co-Founder who has a background in cell biology. She developed a passion for infant nutrition when she struggled to breastfeed her son and has been on a mission to develop another infant feeding option ever since.

Dr. Claire O'Brien, PhD, is a co-investigator on the study and has a background in human milk research studies and lactation. She has a passion for improving maternal and child health.

What is expected of participants during this study?

We are conducting this study in two parts. The main goal of this research is to better understand how diet and lifestyle affect your milk composition. Upon enrolling in this study, you’ll be asked to provide us with about half an ounce of breastmilk from each breast for compositional analyses. You’ll store those in your freezer at home until arrangements can be made to drop them off at our office in Research Triangle Park, have someone from our team pick them up, or we will make arrangements for your milk samples to be mailed to our office in North Carolina.

We’re also conducting an optional sub-study that’s looking to better understand the cellular and molecular basis for lactation. If you chose to participate in this sub-study, you would collect about 5 ounces of milk total. This sample can be left at room temperature for up to three hours or placed in the refrigerator but cannot be frozen. After collection, this milk sample would need to be transferred to BIOMILQ within 24 hours. Members of our team can help make coordinate a drop off at our office or can arrange for someone to pick them up from you. Because these samples must arrive at our office within 24 hours, we can only accept participants for the sub-study who live within 50 miles of Research Triangle Park, NC or who can meet us within that 50-mile radius.

Additionally, all participants will be asked to complete a health history questionnaire online that asks questions about diet, lifestyle, health history, reproductive and lactation history and questions about your baby who you are currently feeding your breastmilk to.

Will participants be compensated?

Participants may receive between $25-75 in gift cards.
